Continuing Numbered Lists in Google Docs

Learn how to seamlessly continue numbered lists in Google Docs with this easy guide. Discover both manual and automated methods for maintaining list consistency.

Have you ever started a numbered list in Google Docs, only to find yourself needing to continue it after adding some text in between? I did! Here’s a quick guide on how to seamlessly continue your numbered lists:

Option 1: Manual Continuation (Easy)

  1. Begin your numbered list as usual:
1. First item
2. Second item
  1. Insert additional text or paragraphs.
  2. When you’re ready to continue the numbered list, start the next paragraph with the following number in sequence:
3. Third item

Google Docs will automatically adjust the numbering for you.

Option 2: Using Google Docs Menu

  1. Start your numbered list:
1. First item
2. Second item
  1. Add text or paragraphs as needed.
  2. To continue the list with automatic numbering:
    • Click on Format in the menu.
    • Go to Bullets & numbering > List options > Continue previous numbering.

This option ensures your list continues seamlessly without manual numbering adjustments.
